ENGLAND were given a serious shock by one of the worst teams in world football — but had Wayne Rooney on hand to make it alright on the night.

Rio Ferdinand's unchallenged header and an Aleksandr Kuchma own goal saw the Three Lions take a two goal lead early in the second half.

But it was down to Rooney to put the result beyond doubt with a brace, after a howler from Ashley Cole saw lowly Kazakhstan grab a shock goal at Wembley.

Jermain Defoe then came off the bench to slot a fifth in the dying moments, as the home fans got the scoreline they came for.

After the incredible 4-1 win in Croatia, the performance was in truth a reminder of how nervous Fabio Capello's men can play at home.

As revealed by SunSport earlier in the week, the Italian picked both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in midfield, with Gareth Barry holding in the centre.

And for the first half, an three man attack was employed, with Emile Heskey flanked by Rooney and Zagreb hero Theo Walcott.

Matthew Upson came in for the injured John Terry, with his partner at centre-back Rio Ferdinand taking on the captain's armband.

Walcott got off to a flyer, using his searing pace to unsettle the minnows — who could only chop him down.

But it was debutant Sabyrkhan Ibrayev who had the first sighter at goal with nine minutes gone, turning on the edge of the box before skewing the ball wide past David James' far post.

And just moments later Upson nearly gave the visitors a gilt-edged chance, with a terrible back pass from the byline that James did well to shank clear.

At the other end Walcott continued to offer England's best weapon in attack, twisting and turning past the full-back to produce one shooting chance and another opportunity to fire across the six yard box.

With 27 minutes on the clock Lampard had half of Wembley stood up, with a swerving shot from distance which cannoned back of the stanchion to ripple the net.

But it was a first period riddled with errors in possession for England, with Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney all guilty in the execution department.

On the stroke of half time the Manchester United man had an effort from distance, but the whistle was still met with some disappointed groans from the home fans.

Kazakhstan came out of the blocks in the second half looking to continue their woe, with Capello bringing on Shaun Wright-Phillips for Barry.

And with seven minutes gone, the diminutive winger saw a shot parried out for a corner by Alex Mokin.

While the save was good, the keeper could only flap at the corner, with Ferdinand nodding home unopposed.

England began to sense a vulnerability from set-plays, and just 10 minutes later the another dead-ball situation led to No2.

Lampard sent a curling ball in from the left touchline, with Aleksandr Kuchma flicking the ball into his own net.

But the lead was halved within three minutes, with Ashley Cole playing a hapless ball across his own box.

The left-back's error was seized upon by Kukeyev, who fired a low shot past the stranded James to prompt red faces all-round.

One man who was not prepared to settle for that scoreline was Rooney, who roared at his team-mates to buck their ideas up.

And the Manchester United star was duly rewarded with some great build-up by Wes Brown and Walcott, with a cross he was able to nod past the diving Mokin.

Rooney then made it two, profiting from some more dodgy set-piece defending to stab home sub David Beckham's free-kick.

And in the dying moments Defoe went through on goal to curl in a neat finish and give the scoreline a heavy tough of gloss. - Sources from The Sun
